A life-long resident of western Queens, Jimmy Van Bramer was elected to the New York City Council on November 3, 2009, representing District 26. Council Member Van Bramer chairs the Committee on Cultural Affairs, Libraries & International Inter-group Relations. From 1999 to 2009, he served as the Chief External Affairs Officer of the Queens Public Library. Jimmy currently lives in Sunnyside Gardens with Dan Hendrick, his partner of eleven years.

Cary Leibowitz, Director of Contemporary Editions, Phillips de Pury

Before Phillips de Pury, Leibowitz served as a VP of Christie’s print department. An expert in contemporary printmaking, he now focuses his efforts on Pop Art and contemporary works. A passionate collector, Leibowitz‘s collection, creations, and expertise have been cited in Art + Auction, Art on Paper, T: The New York Times Style Magazine, and many others. He speaks regularly about collecting and contemporary editions for museums and galleries. Alexander Gray Gallery represents his artwork here in New York. He is younger than Madonna.

In April 2009, Susan Ball joined the staff as Interim Director of Programs after serving on the board for 13 years.  Dr. Ball has extensive experience developing and implementing professional development training programs for artists across the nation. From 1986 – 2006 she was the Executive Director of the College Art Association where she was responsible for overall supervision and administration of 14,000+ members of the artist/scholar professional association founded in 1911. Among her many responsibilities was the oversight of the organization’s Professional Development Fellowship Program and Job Placement Bureau.  From 2006 – 2009 she was the Director of the CAA Centennial Book Project where she led production of the history of the College Art Association.  The book will be published by Rutgers University Press in 2010.

Wesley Miller is an artist in addition to his work for Art21. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy and Art from Sarah Lawrence College and an M.F.A. in Sculpture from Yale University. His first museum exhibition, a public project titled P.S., opened Fall 2001 at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, CT. In 2002, Miller attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture where he completed an installation, Birds of Prey, for the L.C. Bates Museum in Hinckley, ME. He attended the Pilchuck Glass School in 2003. Before joining Art21 in 1999, Miller worked in museum education at the Blaffer Gallery, University of Houston, and in public relations, marketing, and development at the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston, TX.

After more than thirty years, I “retired” in December, 2005 as the Executive Director of the New   York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA),one of the country’s largest providers of grants and services to individual artists and artist-centered organizations in all disciplines.

I am continuing my work as the Project Director for the Urban Artist Initiative/ NYC (UAI/NYC), a new consortium initiative committed to a new grants program for NYC artists of color, and as the Executive Director for New York Creates, an initiative to create more opportunities for New York’s craft artists and artisans, with a special concentration on those from immigrant and Diaspora communities. I have also served as as a consultant for the development of the Louisiana Creative Economy Foundation and for the feasibility of developing a new Visual and Performing Arts Library for the Brooklyn Public Library.

I have served on numerous cultural and educational boards, panels, and committees. In addition to the Board of the Asian American Arts Alliance, I currently serve as a Board member of ArtsConnection, the Design Trust for Public Space, HB Studios. the CUE Arts Foundation, and the International Studio and Curatorial Program and am a Trustee of the Joan Mitchell Foundation. I am on numerous Advisory Boards, including Studio in a School, Symphony Space, the Theater Museum, Louisiana ArtWorks, the Older Artists Project of Columbia University’s Research Center for Arts and Culture, Parson’s/New School Diversity Committee, and CERF’s National Coalition for Artist Preparedness. I am a Steering Committee member of the New York City Arts Coalition.

I write and speak extensively on the arts and artists and cultural policy for numerous national and international publications, conferences, academic institutions, and organizations. I was formerly Assistant Dean for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and the School of International Affairs at Columbia University.
